Since it’s inception in March 2006, Twitter has grown into one of the world’s most popular messaging services. We use it all the time to post updates to our friends; site information; even short novels. Animal Rescue Online would like to take Twitter one step further: promote homeless pets through the world’s largest Tweet Blast.
At this very moment, anywhere from ten to a hundred people are considering getting a pet from a pet store or breeder - time to get them thinking about adopting, instead. Tweet Blast’s aim is to promote individual animals by getting them the exposure they need and cannot otherwise get because the shelter they’re housed at doesn’t have sufficient funds for publicity.
So how does it work? It’s simple, on February 28th, 2009 everyone who is interested in participating will post a tweet with a link to the Petfinder profile page of a homeless animal of their choice.
Do I have to sign up? What do I have to do to be a part of Tweet Blast? All you have to do to be a part of Tweet Blast is post a tweet on February 28th! It’s that simple. To find a homeless pet you’d like to tweet about, use Petfinder’s search engine. Copy and past the URL from your chosen pet’s profile page and use TinyURL to shorten it into a tweet-able size.
Here’s an example of a possible tweet:
“Thinking about getting a horse? Atlas, an adult appaloosa, is looking for a home! http://tinyurl.com/bfxml7 Please consider adopting.”
(The example is 18 words, 115 characters, for those interested in knowing.)Anything else I can do to help? Spread the word! Post a text link back to this site or slap this badge in your sidebar.
Just copy and paste this code:
The badge is 125×125 pixels, and of course, you’re free to make your own if you’re really, really bored and really want to.
If you have any questions or comments, e-mail them to animalrescueonline@gmail.com.

Prince Update
This came in from Amy of Sugar Mutts Rescue:
I actually have good news... the ASPCA took Prince in. After his surgical consultation with the specialist on Tuesday, it turned out that his care was going to cost almost $3,000 (not the $900-$1,000 we had anticipated). They agreed to do the surgery and give him everything he needs if I signed him over, so I did. It's the best possible solution for him really because they will able to provide everything he needs, including the 8 weeks of supervised cage rest he will need to recover full use of his leg. Poor little guy.Very good news for Prince! Yay!Thanks again for donating! That will help with the three 8 week-old puppies I am getting from a high-kill shelter down in Georgia next week! Yikes!

Spread the Love for Black Dogs
Did you know that black dogs are the toughest color dog to adopt out? They are often the last dogs to be adopted and frequently euthanized.
As a black dog adopter and lover, I wanted to promote a book by writer and photographer Pam Townsend called Black is Beautiful: A Celebration of Dark Dogs. Plus, proceeds from sales go to help the SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc.

Please Help Prince If You Can
My friend and colleague Lauren Camerini forwarded this to me. Amy of Sugar Mutts Rescue is a good friend of hers and she can really use our help to give Prince a chance to be healthy.
Greetings from Sugar Mutts Rescue!
We recently rescued Prince, an absolutely precious little 3 1/2 month-old Pit Bull puppy and he needs your help!

He came into the city shelter as a stray with a swollen front leg. After being x-rayed, we discovered that he has a badly broken elbow and needs surgery a.s.a.p. to repair it. He has his pre-op appointment at the ASPCA today with their new orthopedic specialist.
He needs pins/plates put in the joint and it will cost close to $1,000. We have raised about $400 so far and are hoping you can help us raise the balance.
Donations can be made easily via Paypal through our website, www.sugarmuttsrescue.com
Any amount will help!
This little pup is sooo sweet and lovely, you would fall instantly in love with him. He deserves to grow up healthy and strong and live a full, happy life.
Thank you for your help and support and I hope this e-mail finds you all well!

V-day for Doggies
With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I'm sure many of you are itching to show your pets how much you love them. I scoured Etsy and these are some ideas that I thought were fun.

This collar from GreytEscape is simple and pretty. I would put Hank in this in a second.
This collar from classichound is a little more feminine and really says it all.

Akring offers this handmade sweater. I love people sweaters (it's my favorite part of Autumn) and the traditional Scandinavian look of this one is beautiful. Too bad it's only made for small dogs.

I don't know if your dog is talented enough to send love notes, but I'm obsessed with these cards. For starters, the dog silhouette looks just like Hank!

I don't often (or ever) talk about cats, but this tie was way too cute not to mention. There are even button details on the collar!

Westminster on the Horizon
The famed Westminster Kennel Club dog show will be held next Monday and Tuesday, February 9th and 10th at Madison Square Garden.
I do not think I will be attending the show this year, but will probably watch some of it on television. After years of wishing I could go (but having to work), I was finally able to check it out last year. The most fun and interesting part of actually being there is being able to walk around the backstage area where all of the dogs are groomed and held until they compete. Watching the individual breed judging is chaotic because they set up over half a dozen rings that all run simultaneously. Even the group judging is tough to follow because you don't have the handy commentary to help you understand what is going on.
The Best in Show judging was pretty exciting, though. All of the expectation was on the eventual winner, Uno the beagle. I do not pretend to know all of the intricacies that go into judging a show dog, but that dog did have tons of personality. For a dog to resonate personality at a venue as large as MSG... wow.

If you too plan on watching the show on tv, the Hound, Terrier, Non-Sporting, and Herding group competitions will be televised live Monday on USA Network from 8-9PM ET and continuing on CNBC from 9-11PM ET. The Sporting, Working, Toy, and Best In Show competitions will be televised live Tuesday on USA Network from 8-11PM ET.
Does anyone know who the main contenders are this year? Who are you rooting for?

AAB Ladies Gone to the Dogs
My good friends Mayra Castillo and Xochitl Gonzalez are awesome wedding planners and run a company called Always a Bridesmaid. They also have an amazing (and award-winning) blog, Always a Blogsmaid.
What does this have to do with dogs, you ask? Well, they have a recent post about wedding attire for dogs that is totally worth checking out: This Blog has Gone to the Dogs. Mayra scoured the internet and found some of the cutest outfits for your pooch to wear on your wedding day. Thanks ladies!

Labs are No. 1 in NYC and the USA!!
The AKC released 2008's most popular dog breeds in the country. Once again, Labrador Retrievers came in first place. Hank is honored. As much as I usually like the offbeat or different, I can't help but adore this popular breed.
They also released the statistics for various U.S. cities and, again, the Lab won in NYC. Big ups (whatever that means) to our buddy Becca, who's Dachshunds Melody & Emma were represented in 3rd place in NYC.
